Facing Challenges Together: Kami’s Story

Determined. Friendly. Strong. A contagious laugh. A missionary’s heart. Those are just a few ways Kami’s mom Shannon uses to describe her daughter. Each of those qualities has helped Kami overcome the biggest challenge she has faced.

The 18-year-old was diagnosed with a rare condition called slipping rib syndrome three years ago. After three surgeries in her home state of Indiana with no relief to her pain, Kami and her mom traveled to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for a cutting-edge surgery that involved replacing cartilage with dissolvable metal plates.

After the invasive surgery, the family found much needed relief at Ronald McDonald House. “There is such a necessity for places like this for those who are going through challenges,” Shannon said. Kami and Shannon acknowledge that the services the House provides wouldn’t be possible without community members coming together. “I’m inspired by the people who bring in food and their commitment of donations. That means a lot to us. I wish they could only see the sheer normalcy the House provides to a family that’s so stressed and has so many worries.”
