A Work of Heart: Bev’s Story

September 2, 2020

For our Guest Services Manager Bev, working at Ronald McDonald House® is more than just a job. It is a work of heart. That’s because Bev knows exactly what it’s like to be far from home when your child is sick.

At two-years old Bev’s daughter Dannielle was diagnosed with a one-in-a-million heart issue. As a single mom with two other kids, Bev and her family found themselves hundreds of miles from home during extremely stressful circumstances. But because of Ronald McDonald House Charities®, she was never alone. The local House in Oregon where Dannielle was being treated provided a place for her family to rest and food to eat every night. Most of all, the House gave them the home environment and comfort they needed to face their family’s hardest challenge.

Over eight months and one open heart surgery later, Bev and her family went home, but they never forgot the kindness that was shown to them. “Ronald McDonald House was my angel,” Bev shared. “I always promised I would give back when I was able to.”

Bev got her chance 30 years later to do just that. After volunteering at the House in Phoenix, Bev soon became an integral part of the RMHCCNAZ’s guest services team as a staff member. Now, two years later, she enjoys being able to connect with families on their shared experiences. “It’s a very rewarding job,” she said. “It’s fulfilling being able to give back to families. What it all boils down to is we are a safe haven for families with a sick child. It’s a wonderful place with lots of patience and love given to these families.”

As an organization who is committed to providing a comforting place of hope for families when they need it most, we know this wouldn’t be possible without people like Bev. THANK YOU to all of our Guest Services team members for giving your hearts to the families we serve!
