In a year marked with many moments we’d probably rather forget, I like the idea of celebrating the moments that did bring us joy, these silver linings, so-to-speak. For it is in the moments that brought us the biggest challenges that we were also given the opportunity to grow, learn, and achieve what we never thought possible. So to you, my Ronald McDonald House family, think of this as the highlight reel of our year, a look back at some of our proudest moments of 2020.
This year marked our 35th anniversary. In a milestone year primed to celebrate all we have accomplished, we found ourselves extremely grateful for the chance to form stronger bonds with those who play an integral role in our mission – our hospital partners. On the front lines, they worked tirelessly to ensure safe environments for families despite unprecedented circumstances. In turn, we were able to work more intimately with the dedicated social workers from these hospitals as we shifted the way we welcomed families into our three Valley locations. The challenges we faced together certainly made us a stronger support for the families we serve.
And then there’s the amazing Ronald McDonald House staff. This group of people was able to shift into working remotely quickly, while staying focused, engaged, and flexible during each challenge. We have adapted almost every aspect of how we do work and yet we have made so much progress. Our Operations team continued their essential work on each campus taking care of our families and our Houses. They were able to make the most of the quieter times by deep cleaning, refresh of rooms and general repairs. When all of our fundraising plans were cancelled, our Development team quickly moved to think out-of-the-box to make up ground. I am so proud of how they have stepped up to make sure our mission of supporting families in their time of need could continue.
I know much of the reason for our success is because of our loyal and generous community supporters. You have carried us through a difficult year. Thank you for your ongoing support and trust. I’d like to especially thank our Board of Directors, who have given so much of themselves to our mission this year. Each of these incredible professionals have leaned in, stepped up, and made immeasurable commitments for the House. I stand in awe at their love of our mission and the families we serve.
Our year was full of things worth celebrating, honestly too many to name in this letter. And although we know 2021 will bring new challenges, 2020 has laid a strong foundation of what’s possible. We know that childhood illness, injury, and treatment doesn’t stop, but the good news is we don’t either. We’ve proved that this year. We are better together, stronger together, and will continue serving families together.
